At 84 years old, Florence Dittmer could be retired; possibly relaxing on a beach, taking up hobbies she's always wanted to try or simply spending free time with family and friends.
Instead, Dittmer works at Burger King in Waterloo on LaPorte Rd, and has been doing so for the past 24 years.
"I've enjoyed it. They've treated me wonderfully, and given me parties for my birthday," Dittmer said.
People that have worked with Florence call her the hostess of the fast food restaurant. Dittmer checks on customers, wipes down tables and picks up food trays to make sure each and every customer has an enjoyable experience.
Dittmer also always has mints on hand, offering them to tables as they wrap up their meals. One would also find Tootsie Rolls in Dittmer's pockets, for the youngsters at the Burger King.
Years ago, Dittmer used to come to Burger King with her husband. She said one day he asked her, "If you love it so much, why not just work here?"
So, she decided to fill out an employment application.
"I said I like the food, I like the people, so they put me out here. It's just been wonderful," Dittmer said.
Co-workers say it's one big family at the Burger King on LaPorte Rd., and Dittmer is part of that family.
"The customers really love her. People come in here asking for her when she's not here. They're looking for her every day," Eveyette Hall said, who has worked with Dittmer for roughly four years.
As for retiring anytime soon - Dittmer says she has no such plans.
"I'd like to make it to 25 years, and just take one day at a time. That's all we've got."
Dittmer will reach her 25th anniversary at Burger King this upcoming January.
