Schmit ready to lead Columbus Football

Posted: Updated:

The quarterback who led Waterloo Columbus football to its last state title is back to lead his alma mater as head coach.

Back in 2004,  Columbus made an improbable run to a state championship after losing 3 games during the regular season.

It was Brad Schmit throwing touchdown passes in that wide open Sailor offense leading Columbus to the state championship.

Ten years after lifting the championship trophy Brad Schmit returns to be the head coach at his alma mater. Schmit believes he is the right man at the right time.

"I'm an alum --I had success as a player--played at UNI for a year played at Grandview under Mike Woodley --Coached at Ellsworth and at East High with Kody Asmus, helped get that going over there--led them to their first playoff win in 20 something years.  and I love this place--Waterloo is my home it always has been and always will be--I'm here for the long haul."

Columbus opens the season at home next Friday night against Independence
