Upper Iowa looking to build on success

FAYETTE (KWWL) -  After a successful 2013 campaign, the Upper Iowa Peacocks are back and ready to make some noise.

You're going to get better or you're going to get worse,” says head coach Tom Shea, “We want to get better. It's going to be tough."

The Peacocks fueled by an experienced offense, and a much improved defense showed some life last season going 6 – 5, finishing tied for 5th in the 15 team Northern Sun Conference. Six wins may not seem like much until you consider it was the first winning record at Upper Iowa in the team's 8-year division 2 history. Now, the goals are much bigger.

My freshman year I think we won 2 or 3 games.” says senior tight end Lucas Hefty, “Then we grew a little the next year. This last year going over .500, now this next year we're expecting at least playoffs."

The offense is once again expected to lead the way with a senior dominated unit. Cole Jaeschke will run the offense, returning as starting quarterback for his 4th and final season.

Senior Chris Smith, the all-time leading rusher in Upper Iowa history, will once again look for the numbers that garnered him first team all conference honors a year ago. Smith ran for 1,706 yards in 2013 scoring 16 touchdowns.

He's had an awesome career as have the other guys on offense,” says Jaeschke, “He's another guy that makes my job easy."

Returning at tight end is Hefty. The former North Tama prep is considered one of the best in the country at his position after tallying 846 receiving yards last season, and he's looking to go out with a bang in his last year of college ball --

"We have a large senior class this year,” says Hefty, “so we all expect a lot out of us, and we're going to put a lot on our shoulders."
