Employees worry about job outlook after John Deere announces layoffs

Posted: Updated:
WATERLOO (KWWL) - About 460 John Deere employees in Waterloo have been told they'll be without a job indefinitely come October 20th.

Most of the cutbacks will happen in two facilities -- the Tractor Cab Assembly Operations and Drivetrain Operations.

Matt Bauler didn't get a layoff notification, but he's worked at John Deere's downtown facility for about 10 years.

"It pays well. The benefits are good for jobs around here in the Cedar Valley for anybody that doesn't have a college education or degree," he said.

Bauler said he feels bad for his colleagues who will be without a job in a few weeks.

"These guys are young people starting families. it's just sad," he said.

Meanwhile, Steve Dust from the Greater Cedar Valley Alliance & Chamber said he's optimistic about employees getting new jobs by October.

""We are a manufacturing center. We're very strong in manufacturing. A lot of our manufacturers are looking for talent," said Dust.

Dust said the Greater Cedar Valley Alliance & Chamber will work with Hawkeye Community College and Iowa Workforce Development to help those impacted by the layoffs find new opportunities.
