Ely couple gets grant to do own milk processing

Posted: Updated:
ELY (KWWL) - An Ely couple hopes to make and sell dairy products to the public soon with the help of a grant.

Debbie and Dan Takes of Ely received a Value-Added Producer Grant from a program recently passed under the farm bill.

The couple runs a dairy farm in Linn County. They have about 140 milk cows.

Now, they plan on doing their own milk processing, and then they'll sell the products. They want to start by bottling milk, churning butter, and making ice cream and cheese curds.

"Since I started milking I've been thinking about processing my own milk, having more control over the product," said Dan. "We make a really good product and I thought it'd be neat to just be able to sell it direct to the public."

They hope to have this place up and running by July, maybe even earlier so people can enjoy freshly made ice cream throughout the warmer months.
