Summer learning loss prevented through Dubuque program

Posted: Updated:

St. Mark Youth Enrichment in Dubuque provided summer learning assistance to more than 100 students entering first through fifth grades, and the results were positive.

Based on tests administered to the kids before and after this summer's six-week program, nearly 88 percent of the kids gained or maintained literacy skills over the course of the program.

St. Mark's Summer Learning Program helped kids from Dubuque and Dyersville, and its 2014 program was called Fizz, Bang, Boom, Zoom, which focused on science-related themes. The program also provided kids with hands-on activities and learning-focused field trips.

In a news release about the results, St. Mark Youth Enrichment said summer learning loss is an issue most children face. The Iowa Department of Education plans on enacting legislation in 2017 that will prevent third-grade students from advancing to the next grade level until academic standards are met.
