School administrators explain heat-related closings

Posted: Updated:

When classes are cancelled because of heat, school administrators say they're ready to implement a communication plan to notify parents which includes notifications via email and cell phone.

According to Waterloo Schools Superintendent Jane Lindaman, school officials monitor the temperature and humidity closely before making a decision to close because of heat.

"We look at the comfort level in the buildings," she said.

"We look at the humidity. We certainly look at the temperatures, and we go out to the buildings just to get a good feel for it so that we're not making a blind decision," said Lindaman.

Lindaman said all elementary and middle schools in the district have air conditioning, so the only schools that could be impacted by extreme heat are the high schools and a preschool center.

She said there is no set temperature or heat index that would automatically indicate students should go home, but that it's a subjective decision with how it actually feels in the building.
