WAVERLY (KWWL) -

For the past six years Waverly Health Center has been working towards achieving Magnet Recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

On Tuesday, Waverly Health Center was granted the recognition, making it the first independent Critical Access Hospital in the country to obtain the designation.

A Magnet recognition identifies an institution that attracts and retains nurses and recognizes healthcare organizations for patient care, nursing excellence and a positive work environment.

According to Heidi Solheim, director of community relations at Waverly health Center, there are 401 Magnet facilities in the country and only five in Iowa.

Solheim said the other Iowa hospitals in Iowa include Alegent Creighton Health in Council Bluffs, Genesis Medical Center in Davenport, Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque, St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
