Regina looks to continue record run

Posted: Updated:
IOWA CITY (KWWL) -  It's become a routine cycle. Opponents come to Iowa City Regina, opponents get dominated, and opponents go home disappointed. The formula has been pretty simple.

"You've gotta get out on them quick," says senior offensive lineman and UNI recruit Phil Arendt, "and hopefully we get the game over in the first quarter."

They've done that a lot beating all 14 opponents last year by an average of more than 30 points. Even more impressive is the streak; 4 straight state championships and 56 straight wins, an all-time Iowa record.

"To put winning streaks together you have to be able to be good every day. You don't just show up and be great 2 to 3 months from now," says head coach Marv Cook, "You have to be good every single day up to that point. Our kids are working to that."

While the Regals already own the state's longest win streak, obviously no one wants to be on the team that ends it. Still they say that doesn't add a lot of pressure.

"Honestly, we think about it of it of course," admits senior quarterback Drew Cook, "but every day I think we have the same mindset of just going day to day, practice to practice."

Cook, a first team all-state pick and an Iowa recruit, returns after a big season, but gone is leading rusher Riley Dixon. That's where senior Jake Brinkman who averaged more than 8 yards a carry last year steps in. Brinkman will head to North Dakota State next year, but this season he's running behind a line anchored by UNI Panther recruit Arendt.

"I trust those guy," says Brinkman, "Those guys are very athletic. If they do their job, I'll do my job."

The Regals open their season next Friday against Solon.
