Iowa City street to be permanently converted to two-way traffic

Posted: Updated:
IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Drivers in Iowa City might have to expect delays due to construction.

The section of Governor Street between Bowery and Burlington Streets, where both lanes of traffic currently run northbound, is scheduled to permanently revert to two-way.

Conversion is scheduled on August 26 or 27, depending on weather and the contractor's schedule make the traffic run northbound and southbound.

The project will also remove the stop sign at the intersection of Bowery and South Governor Streets.

However, the street will not be closed while that work is being done, but drivers should watch for vehicles and employees who will be installing new signage and pavement markings in the area.

The project comes after residents living in the area were seeking to slow traffic down, more on-street parking, and a more direct access to area destinations.

Back in 2012, a similar project was completed when a section of Washington Street in Downtown Iowa City was converted from one- to two-way traffic.
