CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - A longtime furniture store with a catchy jingle is closing its doors after more than a century in business in downtown Cedar Rapids.

Smulekoff's Home Store in downtown Cedar Rapids will close by the end of the year. The company has been around for 125 years.

The store will close as construction on the city's flood wall begins. The company has decided to go through the city's flood buyout program.

Smulekoff's officials announced they will be out of their current location Dec. 31, but aren't moving locations. Instead, they'll close for good, according to a Tuesday morning press release.

Fifty employees will be laid off. The company says it will fulfill all orders from current customers.

The business, known for its "Smulekoff's -- downtown Cedar Rapids" jingle, was opened by Henry Smulekoff in 1889.

"We at Smulekoff's want to express our thanks and gratitude to everyone who has been our friend and supporter over the years," said Ann Lipsky, president of Smulekoff's. "We appreciate our generations of loyal customers, our staff and our suppliers, who have allowed us to offer quality and value to our customers and to the Cedar Rapids community who have helped us thrive."

Smulekoff's incurred major flood damage during the Cedar Rapids flood of 2008 and was closed for about 45 days as a result. It was one of the first downtown businesses to reopen after flooding.

KWWL's Michelle Corless will have continuing coverage on the News at 5 and 6.
