Richardson talks about being named ISU Starting Quarterback

Iowa State head football coach Paul Rhoads has named a starting quarterback for the season-opener against North Dakota State and his name is Sam Richardson.

Rhoads made the announcement after Monday morning's practice.

Richardson entering his junior season was Iowa State's starting quarterback in the first eight games of the 2013 season.

However, injuries slowed Richardson's productivity later in the season and he was eventually replaced by Grant Rohach as the Cyclone starter for the final four games.

Rhoads says the poise and leadership Richardson displayed throughout the first two weeks of fall camp led to the decision to make him the starter.

“Sam has displayed great leadership and that certainly includes poise in the pocket where he has been very much in control of our offense and of himself,” Rhoads said. “His understanding of the scheme and his decision making has really grown in the last two weeks, and maybe as much as anything, he is throwing a great ball, an accurate ball, a tight ball and a catchable ball.”
