Jewell set to contribute for the Hawkeyes

Posted: Updated:
IOWA CITY (KWWL) - Josey Jewell is ready for his shot in Iowa City.

The former Decorah stand-out sits #2 at outside linebacker, but ran some snaps in Saturday's scrimmage with the Hawkeyes' first unit. So far, he's impressed a lot of people, including senior linebacker Quinton Alston.

"He's very aggressive as you can see," said Alston, "He's just playing fast. That's what I love about Josey."

For most spots in the linebacking corps, competition seems to be open following the graduation of 3 all Big 10 linebackers in James Morris, Anthony Hitchens and Christian Kirksey.

Coach Kirk Ferentz says except for Alston's spot, everything else is up for grabs.

"Really outside of Quinton, I don't think we're totally established with anything," said Ferentz, "I feel really good about Q."

"I have to just step up and be a leader," added Alston, "Get these young guys in the right places and make sure they understand all the little details of our playbooks."

Josey Jewell expects to be one of those guys. After sitting out his redshirt year, Jewell comes in with a lot of momentum from high school. His senior season he led Decorah in interceptions, tackles, rushing, and receiving as the Vikings went on to a class 3A state championship.

Now, he's using that toughness to earn a spot on the field in Kinnick Stadium. and Alston thinks he'll do just that.

"He's a hard nosed guy. He's Iowa. He's a Hawkeye. So, he's just going out there, he's playing fast and I love it."
