Stone fighting for time at Iowa

Posted: Updated:
IOWA CITY (KWWL) -  No matter what uniform he's wearing, Iowa receiver Andrew Stone keeps on fighting.

Stone began his high school career as a receiver at N.U. High School, helping to lead that program to a pair of playoff appearances. When the Little Panthers' program disbanded, Stone suited up and grabbed  11 touchdowns for the Tigers.

After high school, he spent 2 years at Iowa Western, helping the Reivers to a national championship. He left as the school's all-time leading receiver, but still had few division one offers. Eventually he decided to walk-on for the Hawkeyes.

A hamstring injury hampered his development causing him to redshirt in 2013.

Now, Stone appears to be making the most of his final 2 years. Although he currently doesn't appear on the Hawkeyes' depth chart, Stone spent much of Saturday's kids' day open scrimmage running with the second team offense. Back-up quarterback C.J. Beathard targeted him early and often as Andrew Stone opened quite a few fans' eyes.

His teammates, like veteran receiver Kevonte-Martin Manley, expect him to be a factor this year as well.

"Stone's a play maker," said Martin-Manley, "He has a lot of confidence. He's really confident in his abilities. At the end of the day, he just makes plays. He really can help us out."
