Priest to speak on panel in community discussion about depression

Posted: Updated:
WAVERLY (KWWL) - Waverly Health Center will host a community discussion called “Up Front and Personal: Depression and Suicide” on Tuesday, August 26 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The event will take place in Tendrils Rooftop Garden on the Waverly Health Center's campus.

“The death of Robin Williams has been on many peoples' minds recently. It's distressing to think of someone so full of life and so gifted being in such despair. He was the last person many would've expected to commit suicide, but the truth is, there are many people in our communities who suffer from severe depression or other illnesses that cause them to consider suicide," said Dr. Ann Rathe, a psychiatrist at Waverly Health Center.

It's estimated that millions of adults struggle with depression in the United States.

“I recently saw Father Mike Tauke's interview on KWWL in which he shared his own battle with depression and thought about the courage it took for him to be so open about his struggles. We feel something good should come out of this tragedy, and with Father Tauke's help, we invite the community to talk about these important issues,” said Rathe.

Waverly Health Center will have a panel of presenters at Tuesday's event, including Dr. Ann Rathe and Jennifer Schneiderman, behavioral health, and Father Mike Tauke from St. Patrick's Church in Hampton.

This event is free and open to the public.

Those interested in attending are asked to park in the Red Lot and enter through the Tendrils Rooftop Garden event entrance, located south of the Center Pharmacy drive-up.
