Virgin Mary statue found in Mines of Spain Parking lot

Park Rangers at the Mines of Spain in Dubuque spent Friday afternoon trying to figure out how a 2-foot tall statue of the Virgin Mary ended up in one of the recreational areas parking lots.

Wayne Buchholtz is a park ranger at the Mines of Spain. He said a park ranger was out on patrol when he noticed that statue standing in the middle of a parking lot. The ranger then brought it back to E.B. Lyons Interpretive Center. Buchholtz then published a photo of the statue of Facebook in hopes of finding it's owner.

"We have no idea where it came from. (We don't know) if it's been taken from someone's house or a church or something like that," Buchholtz said.

Buchholtz said park rangers are used to finding items people leave behind or place in the area to give others a laugh.

"We'll get for sale signs put up, things like that, but usual not statues," Buchholtz said laughing.

The Dubuque Police Department helped bring the Virgin Mary statue to it's rightful owner. Buchholtz said the statue had been stolen from a homeowner.

"It just wasn't dumped out. They set it there on purpose so that it would be found. It's just still something weird to find in a park," Buchholtz said.
