State representative Henry Rayhons charged with sexual abuse

A state representative who has been in office since 1997 was charged with sexual abuse Friday.

Iowa Rep. Henry Rayhons, 78, of Garner was charged with third-degree sexual abuse, a felony.

According to the Iowa Department of Public Safety, Rayhons allegedly performed a sex act on a person "suffering from mental defect or incapacity" on May 23 at the Concord Care Center in Garner.

Rayhons was booked into the Hancock County Jail on a $10,000 cash-only bond.

The Iowa Attorney General's Office will prosecute the case.

KWWL does not name victims of sexual assault.
