Iowa City hydrant flushing begins Monday

Posted: Updated:
IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

The City of Iowa City Water Division has announced it will begin flushing water hydrants on Monday to remove sediment and clean water distribution pipes.

According to a media release, hydrants will also be checked for any repairs that may be necessary to ensure adequate water flow for the fire department during emergencies.

City officials say rust from iron pipes may be released in the process, which may cause some temporary tap water discoloration.

They say if that happens, continue letting the water run until it's clear.

City officials say washing laundry in the evenings or weekends may be best.

They encourage people in Iowa City to visit www.icgov.org/water to find out when hydrant-flushing will be performed in each neighborhood.

They expect hydrant flushing to be done in the city by mid-October.
