Northeast Iowa Food Bank celebrates a successful garden

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

The Northeast Iowa Food Bank says its garden was a success.

The food bank celebrated its first harvest Thursday at the pantry's community garden in Waterloo.

Fresh produce is often more expensive than boxed items so this garden gives low-income families access to healthy food they may not otherwise buy.

"If you only have ten dollars to buy food, you want to get the most out of your ten dollars, and a lot of times that money doesn't go very far if you buy produce," Northeast Iowa Food Bank Executive Director Barbara Prather said.

University of Northern Iowa's Center for Energy andEnvironmentall Education helped to get the garden started. They plan to plant again next year.
