Wolverines look for 4th straight volleyball title

Posted: Updated:
DIKE (KWWL) - Winning one state championship is quite the accomplishment. The seniors on the Dike-New Hartford volleyball team will have a chance to go out with 4.

"It's just crazy,” says Lizzy Blough, “The tradition here is so strong, and we just feel like it's up to us to keep it going this year."

The dominance over the past couple years has been astounding. The Wolverines have won 100 consecutive matches against teams from Iowa. Their only loss in that span came to a team from Lenexa, Kansas, that at least one publication named the #1 squad in the country.

Dike-New Hartford will travel to get another shot at them next month.

"I'm really excited,” says senior Brooke Morgan, “It will be fun, and having that experience will be nice."

Coach Diane Harms agrees. "This team wants to be challenged, and they want to keep improving. This will definitely let us know where we stand."

The talent returning from last year's team is off the charts. Four out of 6 in the starting rotation were all-staters. That begins with 1st team all-state athletes Morgan, Briana Weber, and Rachel Koop. Add in a second teamer in Blough, and you have a team heavily favored to repeat as champions.

"I think it's a great opportunity to have,” says Weber, “I know most people don't have that opportunity. Hopefully we can make it happen, but we just have to keep working hard."
