Mount Mercy softball complex gets financial boost

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

The Mount Mercy University softball program announced Tuesday that the development of their new softball complex got a big financial boost.

The Lavern T. and Audrey Busse Foundation donated an unspecified amount of money for the development of the University's new softball complex.

Busse Field will be within the new $15 million outdoor athletic complex being built on 22 acres of land at 909 17th Street NE. The existing buildings that were on the land, which was previously home to Terex Cedar Rapids, have been razed.

The new complex will be home to baseball, softball, men's and women's soccer and men's and women's track and field.

“The Busses have stepped forward as ‘game changers' for Mount Mercy athletics and their generosity will forever change the landscape of the University,” President Laurie Hamen said in a written statement. “This transformational investment in support of our Home Field Advantage fundraising campaign underscores their long-standing commitment to our students and this community.”

Some of the money is also being used to develop an endowed scholarship for softball.
