CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

Comedian and actor Robin Williams is dead at age 63 from an apparent suicide.

Williams is known for his role in movies like Good Will Hunting, Mrs. Doubtfire and Dead Poets Society.

Williams' death is impacting some right in eastern Iowa.

Leslie Charipar is the artistic director at Theater Cedar Rapids and says the comedy world won't be the same.

"I also used to do stand up comedy, so he's sort of our god in stand up comedy," said Charipar. The idea that somebody like Robin Williams who was a pioneer, really in stand up and in character work, ultimately became a really amazing actor.

Williams starred in major roles in classic comedies and is known for his rapid-fire comedy.

In his early years, Williams briefly studied political science, before switching to theater.

"I mean I love the whole Aladdin series, Mrs. Doubtfire was also a really awesome movie," said Cedar Rapids resident Jay Burken. "Comedy's still going to do good because he left his mark on it, but it will be sad because his personal style's going to be gone. It's really tragic because he's so funny."
