Marion man sentenced on federal gun charges

A Marion man is headed to federal prison after being sentenced on federal gun charges.

Clint Allen Hughes, 33, pleaded guilty on March 17 to being an unlawful user of controlled substances in possession of firearms and ammunition.

At his sentencing hearing on Monday, evidence was presented that showed Hughes possessed more than twenty firearms, including at least six military style assault rifles, thousands of rounds ammunition and about 90 high capacity magazines that were taken from his home in August 2013. Police say Hughes was an unlawful user of marijuana at the time.

In addition, Judge Linda Reade said Hughes had a 20-year history of substance abuse and had violated pretrial supervision by testing positive for marijuana repeatedly. Reade was also concerned that Hughes made statements to Marion police about being a survivalist and having another hidden location with more guns.

Hughes was sentenced to 12 years and 10 months in prison and must serve a three-year term of supervised release when he is released from prison.
