Hamburg Inn #2 reopens after fire

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

An Iowa City business will soon re-open after a fire forced owners to close the doors.

Officials believe the May fire started in the basement of the Hamburg Inn #2. The building suffered about $30,000 in damages.

“It took out most of the electrical and a lot of the plumbing,” said owner Dave Panther. “It melted the furnace and the water heater.”

The Inn is known as a hotspot for Iowa politics because of their Coffee Bean Caucus. They have hosted multiple U.S. Presidents, and many other high-profile politicians.

“Getting all the politicians in, it's always been a real treat to see them, what they have to say and how they relate to the voters,” Panther said.

Sunday, staffers were finishing repairs, with a faint smell of smoke in the air.

“It's going to be a relief to be back together again,” Panther said. “Now we can get down to the business of running a restaurant and not a repair shop.”

They plan to reopen at 6:30 a.m. on Monday, August 11.
