Quarterback battle sets the stage at Iowa State

Posted: Updated:
AMES (KWWL) -

It almost seems like an annual ritual with Paul Rhoads coached teams. With 20 days remaining until their opening contest, the Iowa State Cyclones still don't know who will be starting under center.

The competition comes down to sophomore Grant Rohach and junior Sam Richardson.

Rohach appears to be the favorite in the race coming in with some momentum following an impressive late season run. The sophomore led the Cyclones to victories over Kansas and West Virginia in their final 2 games. In the game against the Mountaineers, Rohach led Iowa State back from a 24 point deficit to win a triple overtime thriller.

Richardson opened 2013 by starting the Cyclones first 8 games, throwing 11 touchdowns, but injuries forced him out of the number one spot.

Rhoads expects to name a starter following a closed scrimmage on Saturday.
