Volunteers help repair homes in Wellington Heights

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

A four-day exterior repair project in the Wellington Heights neighborhood wrapped up this week.

Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity (CVHFH) and Thrivent Financial and the Affordable Housing Network Inc. (AHNI), hosted A Brush with Kindness (ABWK) program.

Volunteers gathered in the Wellington Heights area in Cedar Rapids to work on five owner-occupied homes including landscaping, painting, and other exterior repairs.

Volunteers started Wednesday, August 6th in an effort to make improvements to one the oldest and most cherished neighborhoods.

ABWK is a neighborhood revitalization effort focusing in the Wellington Heights area of southeast Cedar Rapids.

Volunteers partnered with homeowners who meet financial and need-based requirements to provide much needed exterior repairs on their homes.

Partner families pay back on a no-profit, no-interest loan to cover the cost of repairs along with completing 25 hours of "sweat equity" work when possible.

CVHFH launched the ABWK program in 2010, completing several dozen projects since that time in both Linn and Benton Counties.

Habitat has focused much of the work on the southeast side of Cedar Rapids.

They say that area of the city was undeserved in the years following the 2008 flood.
