Low river levels impacts some barges near Guttenberg

CLAYTON COUNTY (KWWL) -

Lower river levels on the Mississippi River are keeping some barges at bay.

Officials with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers told KWWL a portion of the Mississippi River, just North of Guttenberg, was shut down Thursday until Friday morning. They said they believed it was because a barge went off the channel and was not able to move.

KWWL talked owner of Newt Marina, Dan Arnold, who said earlier Friday a barge stopped just north of Guttenberg on the Mississippi river because river levels were at just 6 feet for a portion of the river. He said the barge driver didn't want to take any chances of getting stuck.

KWWL went just north of Guttenberg and talked to some people who live on the Mississippi River who said they've noticed river traffic stopping frequently. They also have noticed that river levels are low in some areas on the river.
