Cedar Falls announces location for proposed new high school

Posted: Updated:
CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) - The Cedar Falls Community School District has released the location where the proposed new high school would be built if voters approve the bond referendum in September.

Janelle Darst, Coordinator of Communications and Community Relations, says the district is developing a purchase agreement for 50 acres of land off West 27th Street, directly west of the University of Northern Iowa campus, that is currently owned by UNI. The offer is contingent on the passage of the bond referendum on Sept. 9 and approval by the Cedar Falls Board of Education and the Board of Regents.

"We are excited to potentially be building the proposed new high school just west of the University of Northern Iowa campus. This will allow Cedar Falls Schools to continue, and build upon, our strong relationship with the University. We look forward to the future and know this site will allow for great opportunities to further enhance and expand student learning and partnerships," Dr. Andy Pattee, Cedar Falls Schools Superintendent, said in a written statement.

Voters will actually vote on two propositions on Sept. 9. The first, Proposition A, is to grant approval to perform the construction projects. Proposition B is to allow the district to levy up to $4.05 per $1,000 of assessed value to pay for the projects.

Besides building a new high school, the money would be used to pay for remodeling and additions to North Cedar Elementary and Orchard Hill Elementary, to build a new three-section elementary school, to repurpose the current high school to accommodate the relocation of the Educational Service Center and Administrative office building and then sell those two properties.

The $118 million from the bond, along with $10-$11 million from the one-cent local option sales tax, would be divided as follows:

- $87,566,506 to build the new 1,400 student high school
- $19,416,288 to build a new elementary school
- $9,464,754 for remodeling and additions at Orchard Hill Elementary
- $7,674,027 for remodeling and additions at North Cedar Elementary
- $4,731,602 to remodel the current high school to become the Educational Service Center and Administrative Offices.
