Linn Co. ATV crash brings back painful memories for Wisconsin mom

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. (KWWL) -

One mom knows all too well the pain of losing children and losing those children in an off-road vehicle accident.

The memories came flooding back for Carrie Nolan after hearing about the deaths of 9-year-old twins, Colton and Clayton Novak. The twin brothers were killed when the ATV they were driving crashed into a creek Monday afternoon in rural Linn County, according to the Linn County Sheriff's Office.

Carrie Nolan lost two of her children to an ATV accident on Aug. 23, 2005.

"It's tough. Even if it's been nine years, it doesn't feel like it. It's tough," said Nolan.

Austin (9) and Justin Nolan (7) were "Irish Twins" born just 20 months apart. On August 23, 2005 the boys decided to hop on the family's adult sized ATV to find their father in a nearby field. The boys crossed a major highway to get to one of the family's other farms.

The boys found their father and followed him out onto the road. The boys crossed the highway, but couldn't see a truck pulling a horse trailer coming. They were struck as they attempted to cross the highway.

"That day I actually scolded them and told them that they couldn't be on the ATV. I told one of our hired guys that we don't want the kids on the ATV. He took the ATV, but I guess he had to go get the cows across the road and when he brought the ATV back to the barn he left the key in the ATV. The boys found the ATV and got into it," Nolan said Thursday.

Nolan said the recent accidents across Iowa have hit close to home.

"The accidents in Iowa recently affect you, they really do. Everybody thinks it's not going to happen to them and it does, and then it's too late," Nolan said.

Nolan said she hopes sharing her story will help save other children's life.
