Waverly dog is nominated for Hero Dog Award

WAVERLY (KWWL) -

A Waverly dog is a candidate for a national award.

Chaney is one of eight dog finalists nominated for the 2014 American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards. The 8-year-old lab retired from the Marines in 2012 after multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Chaney sniffed out improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and is credited for saving countless lives. Chaney's owner is Cpl. Matt Hatala, a volunteer at Retrieving Freedom, Inc., a nonprofit that trains service dogs for veterans and children with autism.

KWWL met Hatala and Chaney last July; click here to read the story: http://www.kwwl.com/story/24799867/2014/02/23/marine-veteran-expreses-the-importance-of-service-dogs
