Waverly wins $100,000 dog park in nationwide contest

Posted: Updated:

It's official -- the City of Waverly has a big check in their hands for a new dog park.

The announcement came down at 6 p.m. on Thursday that Waverly was selected for a $100,000 dog park as part of a nationwide online contest sponsored by PetSafe.

Waverly beat out more than 1,000 other communities in the country.

PetSafe, a pet product manufacturer out of Tennessee, sponsors the contest to help build dog parks in communities that otherwise don't have the resources to build them.

For five years, people in Waverly have been fundraising for a dog park. In those five years, people have raised about $16,000.

The City of Waverly has already approved a plot of four acres of land for the home of the dog park on the southeast side of town, and people are looking forward to breaking ground.

"Fencing is huge, then getting the land prepped, but then after that we want agility courses, we want fountains, someone suggested a giant slingshot for tennis balls," said Nikki Welch, who helped head up the online voting efforts in the contest that started in May. "It's been a wild ride of all these ideas. They're popping up all over what people want from out super fun dog park."

Director of Leisure Services Tab Ray said there will still be public hearings before breaking ground on the dog park, but he's optimistic construction will start in the spring.
