DES MOINES (KWWL) - Iowa State Fair: Nothing Compares. Most Iowans would likely agree with the slogan, as the 2014 Iowa State Fair begins Thursday.

The gates in Des Moines opened around 5 a.m. Thursday. Fair-goers on opening day can expect an array of entertainment, including wine sampling, line dance lessons, and duck and turkey calling contests.

The Red Trouser Show begins at noon Thursday on Expo Hill, featuring acts of strength and acrobatics.

Ladies... think you have the best chicken call in all of Iowa? Well, that's a contest for you at 1:30 p.m. in Farm Bureau Pioneer Hall.

Other attractions include FFA displays, live music and the newly renovated Patty and Jim Cownie Cultural Center.

Thursday is also Iowa Lottery Day in which fair-goers 21 years and older can receive a coupon for one free All or Nothing lotto play ticket between the hours of 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. Those who wish to enter the Iowa Lottery can do so between those hours at Expo Hill for a chance to win from a collection of prizes.

The Iowa State Fair will run through Aug. 17. For more information, click here.
