UNI Media Day: Quarterback spot up for grabs

Posted: Updated:

The 2014 Northern Iowa football team is loaded.

The Panthers return 18 starters and have a combination of talent and experience on both sides of the football, including at quarterback. Panther junior quarterback Sawyer Kollmorgen, a traditional pocket passer, has 20 career starts and through two seasons, he ranks in the top 10 in passing yards and touchdowns in UNI history.

But senior Brion Carnes, a Nebraska transfer, stepped in last year when Kollmorgen was hurt and led the Panthers to three wins down stretch with his ability to run and pass.

UNI head coach Mark Farley will wait a couple of weeks until making a decision , but he says regardless of who starts the season, history shows that both will play.

"What they need to know is that nobody is going to lose the battle," Farley said. "In two weeks I am going to decide who lines up underneath center on the first day. Give him the opportunity (and) try to stay consistent with that guy, but you're one play from being the starter. It's how you handle that day of when I say this is our guy will be the biggest factor of what will become the fifth or sixth game of that season. Fourteen years and I have never had a quarterback make it through yet."

UNI opens the season Aug. 30 at Iowa.
