Steve McGraw returns as Waterloo East boys basketball coach

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Hall of Fame coach Steve McGraw is returning to the helm of the Waterloo East boys' basketball program.

McGraw, who led the Trojan program for 30 years, is the winningest coach in program history with a 465-168 record.

The Trojans made 13 state tournament appearances under McGraw between 1979 and 2009, and won two state titles in 1990 and 2003.

“I'm anxious to get back and work with the kids at East,” McGraw, an Indianola native, said in a written statement.

McGraw, who was inducted into the Iowa Boys' Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010 after collecting 579 wins in 39 years, last coached in Clarksville in 2012.

McGraw was selected by a committee made up of assistant coaches, parents and student athletes.

McGraw's hiring is still pending board of education approval.

    The University of Northern Iowa is represented by seven members on the 2017 Missouri Valley Football Conference's preseason squad as announced by the league office on Monday. Senior defensive back Malcolm Washington (Houston, Texas) and senior linebacker Jared Farley (Cedar Falls, Iowa) were each named to the first team heading into the 2017 season.

    Tom Jenk Jr. gave the Beckman baseball team a bit of a boost. The longtime Blazers' coach, who hasn't been in the dugout this season due to a battle with a brain tumor, paid a visit to his team the day before Beckman topped Denver 7-1 to open the class 2A state baseball tournament.
