CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

The Cedar Rapids Fire Department says paper sky lanterns can create a fire hazard.

Thin paper sky lanterns, also known as Chinese Lanterns, have a lit candle inside are sent floating into the air.

The Fire Marshal’s Office has received several concerns from residents and businesses about sky lanterns sent into the air over the Fourth of July, at recent weddings and other events throughout the community.

The fire department says they consider sky lanterns as uncontrolled fire hazards because the wind can carry the lanterns onto a rooftop, power line, field or trees.

Additionally, the fire department says many of the sky lanterns have wire in the frame hazardous to animals. In other states, fire officials have documented animals dying after eating the lanterns after they land.

Besides the safety hazard of sky lanterns, they are also considered prohibited devices in Cedar Rapids. They are illegal in Cedar Rapids under International Fire Code.
