6-time all star Joe Mauer walked up to the plate to a loud ovation.
However,  moments later – the Twins star opened his rehab start grounding in to a 6-4-3 double play.
Mauer: “First at bat I've had in a month. I was a little upset with what I did, but it is what it is.”
Things did turn around for Mauer in the third – driving a pitch right up the middle for his only hit of the night. A couple of batters later – Bryan Haar with a rope in to left center – Mauer's sent home by his older brother Jake – and slides in home safely – as his first night back results in a run and a one for three night at the plate.
Mauer: “Haven't been in a game in a month, to get those juices flowing, it was really good.”
As for teammate Ricky Nolasco – his night started by giving up a base hit Wisconsin's lead off hitter – but he'd finish strong – throwing 51 pitches, allowing no runs, and giving up just 2 hits in 3 and 2/3's innings pitched. For both Nolasco and Mauer – just getting back to baseball was a big deal.
Mauer “It was fun. It was a great atmosphere tonight. Fans came out, the adrenaline was definitely pumping which you can't simulate in the training room or on your way back. You've just got to go through it.” And the Kernels crushed Wisconsin 9-0.
