Iowa DNR urges safety for ATVs and off-road vehicles

Posted: Updated:
WATERLOO (KWWL) - "Most kids have been on an ATV. Even if you don't own one, it doesn't mean your kids aren't on one," said David Downing, manager of the Off Highway Vehicle Program with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

Downing said it's not off-road vehicles that are dangerous, but the operators of those vehicles.

He said crashes are usually the result of people violating a warning on a machine or a disobeying a state guideline.

"Almost all accidents are avoidable," he said.

Downing said ATV riders between ages 12-17 must have an "ATV Education Certificate," which proves the riders have taken a safety course, but he recommends everyone take a safety course.
