CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

The Cedar Rapids Kernels are blessed to have some high-powered major league talent this week with the arrival of six-time all-star and three-time American League batting champion Joe Mauer of the Minnesota Twins.

Mauer will be spending a week with the Kernels, Minnesota's Class-A affiliate, to rehab an oblique muscle injury he suffered in early July.

Mauer, the No. 1 overall pick in Major League Baseball in 2002 talked about rehabbing with the Kernels, who are managed by his brother, Jake.

"It's great, you know," Mauer said. "I'm glad to get out of the training room to the field. I know when I was able to start a rehab stint there are other options and now Cedar Rapids is home for a week, so that makes it a lot easier on us nice being so close to the Twin Cities. Teaming up with my brother is a lot of fun and Tommy Watkins, who I played with. It's going to be a lot of fun."

Mauer is set to play home games with the Kernels Tuesday and Wednesday nights at Veteran's Memorial Stadium. Kernel officials will also open the Stadium at 3 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday for Kernels batting practice.
