What to look forward to at the Iowa State Fair

Posted: Updated:
DES MOINES (WHO) - The Iowa State Fair is a lot like its iconic butter cow. You have a good idea of what you’re going to see, but it’s different every year. In addition to that cow, sculptors will use hundreds of pounds of butter re-creating a scene from the classic film, “Field of Dreams” for its 25-year anniversary. Visitors can also check out the new 25 ft. sculpture of Grant Wood’s famous “American Gothic."

The third floor of the Cultural Center will also reopen. The building improvements include new exhibit space, additional restrooms, and air conditioning. This floor will show off some of the Fair’s photography and a demonstration stage where visitors can watch artists work.

The Grandstand has plenty of new acts this year, starting with Newsboys playing on Thursday at 8 p.m.

The fair also has plenty of tasty treats to look forward to. The new bargain-priced treats include: Brownie Blitz, Caprese Salad On-A-Stick, Smoked Brisket and Bacon Mac N Cheese, Three Buck Bowl, and Funnel Cake Sticks – all for $3 each.

If you’d like to put aside some extra cash for treats be sure to buy your tickets before Thursday to get a discount. You can buy your tickets online, at the ticket office, or local grocery stores (Hy-Vee, Fairway, & and Dahl’s).

Some fair fanatics set up camp at the fairgrounds more than a week ago. The Iowa State Fair has 2,300 campsites. While plenty of people took advantage of the first come, first serve spots Sunday morning, the reserved spots have a wait list with an average wait time of 10 years.
