Iowa City neighborhoods encouraged to participate in National Night Out

Posted: Updated:
IOWA CITY (KWWL) - On Tuesday, Iowa City neighborhoods are invited to join thousands of other communities nationwide for the 31st Annual National Night Out (NNO) crime and drug prevention event.

Iowa City officials say over 38 million people in almost 15,000 communities from all 50 states are expected to participate in the event to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness.

Many neighborhoods will be hosting special events such as anti-crime rallies, visits from the police and flashlight walks.

From 4:30 to 7 p.m., Iowa City residents are encouraged to turn on their outside lights and spend the evening outdoors visiting with neighbors and police officers.

Iowa City Police Officers will attend all registered block parties to meet residents and distribute safety information. They will be handing out special gifts to children.

To register your event, contact Officer R.A. Mebus at or call the Crime Prevention Office at 319-356-5273.
