DCI called for fatal officer-involved shooting

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is looking into a fatal officer-involved shooting.

It happened in Fort Madison on August 3 around 1:45 a.m. Officers said they saw Ryan J. Swearingen, 27, slashing tires with a knife. When police arrived, Swearingen ran, and hid in a home. When officers entered the home, police said Swearingen came out of a closet brandishing a knife.

Then, an officer shot him. He was pronounced dead at the Fort Madison Community Hospital.

The DCI will investigate the incident.

An autopsy will be performed in Ankeny.

The officer's name is not being released, but the person has been placed on paid administrative leave.
