DNR: Keep kids, pets out of contaminated river

CHEROKEE (KWWL) -

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says children and pets should stay away from the Little Sioux River near Cherokee because of a wastewater spill.

The city of Cherokee repaired the leak in a 16-inch forcemain that was allowing untreated wastewater to flow into the Little Sioux River. It was discovered around 10:30 a.m. on Friday. The spill was focused in the area of 630 River Road.

The DNR recommends staying out of the water for 24-48 hours. It should still be safe for kayaking and other above-water activities as the wastewater moves downstream.

The DNR is monitoring cleanup.
