North Polk ends Beckman's reign in Class 2A

DES MOINES (KWWL) - North Polk ended Beckman Catholic’s two-year reign as state champion as the Comets defeated the Trailblazers 2-0 in the Class 2A state championship game Saturday afternoon at Principal Park, earning their school’s first state baseball championship.

The two teams had met for the 2A title in 2012 and 2013, with Beckman winning by scores of 3-1 and 2-1.

Grant Schiltz led off the bottom of the first for the Comets with a single to center. Schiltz stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. Another error allowed Schiltz to score and Reed Smith to reach first base safely.

Schiltz helped the Comets do more scoring in the third inning, this time from the batter’s box. Following a Chris Flynn double, Schiltz singled to center, and the Beckman center fielder had trouble fielding the hit. That error allowed Braeden Ingersoll, running for Flynn, to score and Schiltz advance to third.

Reed Smith then singled when the baseball hit off Trailblazer starter Conner Klostermann. Schiltz was unable to score on Smith’s single. North Polk left three runners on base in the inning.

North Polk starting pitcher Cole Jackson (7-1) went the distance, earning the complete-game shutout, giving up four hits, walking none and striking out 10 along the way. Jackson fired a no-hitter and struck out 15 in the Comets’ first-round win.

Beckman left seven runners on base in the two-run loss. Klostermann (7-1) went a complete six innings in the loss, giving up two runs — none earned — on seven hits, walking two and striking out six.

The Trailblazers finish the season with a record of 29-14, while the Comets compiled a record of 32-5.
