Dubuque fire leaves family without a home

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

A fire late Friday night in Dubuque destroyed a home and also impacted a nearby apartment complex.

Emergency crews received a call just before midnight Friday in the 1800 block of Jackson St. No one was hurt, but when crews arrived on scene, they found a fire in the rear of the home and a downed power line in the backyard.

The fire eventually extended to the attic of the home, and smoke reached the apartment complex next door.

People on scene told KWWL they heard what sounded like an explosion before the fire.

"I was listening to the scanner, and they said that there was a house fire. We have daycare kids that live in this block so I wanted to make sure it wasn't their house," Grace Brade said.

Crews asked residents who live in the apartment complex next door to not stay there last night, due to the smoke.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
