1 injured after car strikes train near Homestead

The Iowa County and Johnson County Sheriff's Offices are investigating after a car struck a train east of Homestead.

Iowa County Sheriff Robert Rotter says the collision happened at a rural railroad crossing just south of Highway 6 on Johnson/Iowa Road east of Homestead.

70-year-old Gerald Schaapveld drove into the side of the train around 6:30 p.m., according to officials.

Schaapveld escaped without injury. His wife, 68-year-old Helen Schaapveld, was taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals. She is expected to survive.

No one on the train was injured.

Rotter says Schaapveld probably had a hard time seeing the train since the collision was at a spot where no crossing arms are present and there is a lot of vegetation nearby.

The sheriff says the nearby vegetation does meet legal requirements. In addition, he says the county has a train accident once every five or six years and does not believe this is a big problem.
