Don Bosco loses on walk-off hit to defending champion Newman

DES MOINES (KWWL) - Top-seeded Newman Catholic advanced to the state championship with a walk-off 5-4 win over fourth-seeded Don Bosco in a Class 1A semifinal round game Thursday afternoon at Principal Park.

Don Bosco scored two runs in the top of the seventh to rally from a 3-0 deficit and tie the game at 4 with the defending state champion Knights.

Joe Burgmeier led the bottom of the seventh off with a double for the Knights, advancing to third on a error by the left fielder on the play. After intentional walks to the next two batters to load the bases, Parker Dondlinger smacked a ball over a drawn-in  Don Bosco outfield to score Burgmeier and end the game.

Don Bosco (31-4) trailed the entire game and was down 4-2 in the seventh. The first three batters reached base for the Dons to start the inning. Dalton Smith grounded into a 6-4 fielder's choice, scoring Spencer Bruess, and a throwing error by Knights shortstop Jack Fitzgerald allowed the second Dons runner to cross the plate.

Newman struck early with three runs in the first inning. The first three batters for the Knights reached base, and an error by Don Bosco third baseman Cade Schares allowed one run to score before Peter Lapointe singled in the final two runs of the inning.

Don Bosco scored runs in both the third and fifth innings to make it a 3-2 game.

Burgmeier (7-0) picked up the win for Newman, pitching 2/3 of an inning in the seventh and striking out one. He finished the day 2-for-4 at the plate.

Brandon Zumbach (4-2) took the loss for Don Bosco. Zumbach pitched two innings, giving up an earned run on three hits and three strikeouts.

Newman starter Kaden Wadle went 6 1/2 innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on 10 hits, two walks and three strikeouts.

Senior Travis Havel (10-0) started the game for Don Bosco, allowing four runs, three earned, on four walks and two strikeouts in four innings pitched for the no decision. Havel recorded his 100th strikeout of the season.
