Retailers ready for tax-free shopping this weekend

Posted: Updated:
WATERLOO (KWWL) -

It's tax-free weekend!

While things like accessories and school supplies will still be subject to sales tax, the tax-free holiday requires retailers to waive sales tax on most clothing and shoes this Friday and Saturday.

Employees at Target are expecting a big crowd.

"It's not quite the extent of Black Friday, but it'll definitely be a busy weekend. We look forward to it," said Owen Teeling, who works at the Waterloo Super Target.

While most clothing and shoes fall under the tax exempt status during the tax-free holiday, things like food, jewelry and accessories will still be taxed.

"You can save a significant amount especially if you're coming to do some shopping for yourself and bringing your kids along, getting some outfits and uniforms for school... it can definitely add up," said Teeling.

Teeling said Target will have extra staff on hand to keep up with the shoppers.

"We'll definitely have the lanes staffed up front for that increased traffic, so we should be ready to go," said Teeling.

A gloomy and rainy afternoon didn't stop people from making it out early to the campgrounds Friday. By the afternoon, Scales Pointe Campground and Marina in North Liberty, was full of RVs, tents, and houseboats ready to celebrate the Memorial Day weekend. "We don't worry about the weather. We just put a tent up, put a poncho on, and drink in the rain," Mike Kirk said. Kirk said he's been camping at the same spot for five years now and that it's the best place to be. ...More >>
