Learn about your yard, and what wants to live in it

Posted: Updated:

To help residents learn how to create beautiful, yet low-maintenance yards that benefit the environment, Backyard Abundance is hosting a free yard tour Saturday, Aug. 2 in Iowa City.

The tour will take place at 903 Walker Circle from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m..

Neighbors converted strips of turf grass into an all-native oasis around a town home in the Iowa City Peninsula Neighborhood; the goal was to achieve a landscape in which native plants were beautifully arranged while also being friendly to bees, birds and butterflies.

Features and learning opportunities at the yard tour include:

  • Best native plants for small spaces
  • Preparing soil to go from turf grass to native plants
  • Previous pavement for storm water management
  • Xeriscaping: landscaping that reduces or eliminates the need for supplemental irrigation
  • Raised beds of native plants and vegetables

Experts from the Coralville-based Earthview Environmental will be ready to answer questions about native plants and stormwater management practices.
