The drought has ended. Waverly-Shell Rock knocked off Solon 3-1 to win a game at the state baseball tournament for the first time in school history.

The top-ranked Go-Hawks had gone 0-3 in their previous trips.

"That first win in team history is a great feeling," said starting pitcher Sean Westendorf, "but we hope we can get a couple more down here at state and see where we go."

Dan Stensland made the biggest impact for Waverly-Shell Rock. Stensland picked up the game-winning RBI with a two-run single in the second inning. The senior later started a pivotal 5-4-3 double-play off the bat of Lucas Kane, ending the top of the 5th inning, while stranding a Spartan runner on third.

"Yeah, the ball was rocketed at me, and they call it the hot corner for a reason," said Stensland, "Sam Broome had a great play at 2nd to get a good turn and get it to James Heine for the play."

As if that wasn't enough, he also relieved Westendorf with the bases loaded and two outs in the seventh inning. Stensland struck out Solon's Dillon Drake on three pitches to end the ball game and earn the save.

As for Westendorf, the senior struck out six in 6 2/3 innings pitched. He gave up the only run, an unearned tally for Solon in the seventh inning.

Waverly-Shell Rock advanced to face Davenport Assumption in Friday's Class 3A state semifinal at Noon.
