Free "DIY" rain barrel workshop set for Sunday

Posted: Updated:

Iowa City's Friends of Historic Preservation is sponsoring a free demonstration workshop on "Do it Yourself" rain barrels.

The program is set for 4 p.m. this Sun., Aug. 4 at East Side Recycling Center Education Center, located at 2401 Scott Boulevard SE in Iowa City.

Joe Smith, also known as Carpenter Joe, will teach participants the step-by-step instructions of how to make rain barrels out of recycled materials.

The workshop, which is entirely free and open to the public, will also teach people why catching rainwater is so important.

Jayne McGuire, president of Friends of Historic Preservation, said, "Not only do we save money and resources by reusing rainwater, but by diverting the initial flow of the water we eliminate (contaminants) that would otherwise end up entering our waterways."

She said rain barrels help contribute to sustainable environments for wildlife and also help alleviate flooding and damage to structures.

Carpenter Joe will be available after the workshop for questions.
